Count down to a dictatorship

April 2, 2004

Sri Lankan my be just hours away from becoming a country governed by a dictator. What's really alarming is the silence of the UNF on this very issue.

One of the parties contesting the election, the UPFA says it will look into the possibilities of changing the constitution with out the required 2/3 majority. Imagine what that can lead to, they party in power can then change the constituion as they please. They can simple do away with elections all togher.

The UNF is ignoring the issue like an ostrich burying it's head in the sand. This has been the attitude of the UNF for the last few years. They firmly believe that if you pretend that the problem does not exist it will go away.

The election has just been concluded. The results are just a few hours away. According to the election laws (which are observed more in breach) the campaining had to stop two days before the election though the left alliance which controls the state media is continuing to spit out thinly veiled propoganda right until the morning of the election.
