Chess
March 29, 2004
Reading through some of the past entries you might be tempted to think that cricket is my favourite sport. It is not. Chess happens to be my favourite sport. Until very recently chess in this country did not get the recognition it deserves.
For many years the chess federation of Sri Lanka was lead by a group of people who only had their own interest at heart and cared nothing for the game or it's players. Fortunately a group of people lead by Derrick Perera gradually took over the reigns and things have improved in leaps and bounds.
The country moved from having no tournaments at all to being a destination on the international chess map. The asian junior chess championship for 2002 and 2003 was held in Sri Lankan.
The official site for the 2003 games was 'contributed' by Rad Inks.
Today the anual general meeting of the chess federation is scheduled to be held. Derrick is no longer directly involved with the affairs of the local federation since assuming office as the secratary of the asian chess federation. Hopefull someone who can continue what he started will be elected to office today.
