Lies damn lies and website statistics

April 7, 2004

I wrote the other day about how people have been lead to believe the economy is weak despite figures that indicate a strong growth.

The other side of the coins you find the face of websites statistics. Sri Lankan managers are still unaware of the difference between hits and page views. As we all know a hit can be anything. If you load up your web page with 50 images, an animation, a style sheet and a javascript each page view will be recorded as 54 hits!

A lot of webmasters with insignificant websites that hardly get 10,000 page views a month are making lots of money by selling advertising to gullible companies. How do they do it? they cut up the images on their pages into tiny little pieces so that each page has at least a 100 files on it. 100 into 10,000 is a cool million hits.

Sri Lanka's CIMA and BCS qualified managers think hits are gold dust. So what's CIMA what's BCS? more on that later.
