Hijacked Platforms
March 4, 2004
The paliament was dissolved four years ahead of schedule throwing the country into confusion. Before the dissolution the opposition was strongly critical of the peace process. Their goal was to enter parliament with the votes of the Sinhala hardliners.
Unfortunately for them this particular political platform was hijacked by a group of extremist buddhist monks who decided to contest the elections. (They aim to make Sri Lanka the buddhist version of Iran)
Having lost their platform and realising that most Sri Lankans wanted peace the left aliance promptly decided to hijack the prime ministers platform. The prime minister is the architect of the peace process.
Now the left alliance is not just campaigning for peace but for a better peace! What this better peace is they are not wiling to say.
So what is the UNP doing? it's lay low and say nuffin time (they are confused like everyone else). To make things little more complicated today's newspapers carry the story of a possible split in the LTTE - and a strong denial of this story on the tamilnet site.
So what's the public doing? watching the austrialian cricketers hammer their Sri Lankan counterparts.
