Sea water in Kelani river: Supply to Greater Colombo cut off
March 5, 2004
This news item is typical of the sad state of affairs in Colombo. The kelani river is the only source of water supply to the city. It never runs dry, but what's happening now is that when the water level drops the backflow from the sea runs up the river mixing wtih the fresh water.
The main cause of this once again is politians. Now it's easy to blame politians for everything, but once again this is not an unfair accusation. Sand mining is carried out on the kelani river by goons sponsered by the politians. In most parts of the country sand mining is banned but politians think the laws do not apply for them.
