Doctors On STRIKE
March 15, 2004
Sri Lankan doctor educated at public expenditure, paid good salary by the government and assured of a pension on retirement have gone on strike.
On strike at the hospitals but the private practice continues. The strikes are probably a ploy to bring more patients to these 'dispensaries' as they are called where the doctors practice medicine after normal working hours.
The real reason for the strike is that recently other medical workers have been given a pay hike (yes after a strike). That means the difference in salaries between doctors and other staff (who work a lot harder) has been reduced. Thus thousands of poor patience are paying a high price to massage some bruised egos.
